The chief of Bulgaria's Nuclear Regulation Agency, Emil Vapirev, died on Friday.

Information about the cause of Vapirev's death was not immediately disclosed. Employees at the agency said Saturday that the burial service was due on September 13.

The 56-year-old man chaired the Agency since 2002.

"Professor Vapirev stood up for the interests of Bulgaria's nuclear energy sector when it was going through rough times. He also enjoyed international recognition," a message from the NRA said.
