PRIME MINISTER: TOO EXPENSIVE TO DRIVE 300KM

Politics | November 18, 2001, Sunday // 00:00

Nov 18, 14:12 - The Bulgarian Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg said at noon at the airport that he will not vote at the second round of the presidential elections upon his return from New York. The reason for his decision is that as he said:“it is not rational to travel to more than 300km away from the capital with two cars.” Saxe-Coburg is registered in the village Banya, Karlovo region. According to the law, he should go there to cast his vote. The Bulgarian Prime Minister added that he has already expressed his support for one of the candidates. Saxe-Coburg reiterated that the officials whom he met in the United States accepted positively the anti-corruption program of the Bulgarian Government. Prime minister's statement is rather controversial, as all media and politicians called to the voters to go to the poll this Sunday, after during the first round November 11 the electoral activity was unprecedently low.
