The opening of Japanese culture days in Sofia was marked by a photo exhibition dedicated to 85 years of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Japan.

Pictures from nearly 40 photo artists tracing back "100 years of Tokyo" can be seen in the National Arts Gallery.

Besides the development of fine arts in the "country of rising sun", the pictures follow also the technical progress of Japanese reporter photography.

The exhibition features works selected among the abundance of some 20,000 photos from the rich collection of the Japan Camera Industry Institute (JCII), a co-organiser of the event along with the National Gallery and the Japanese Embassy in Sofia.

The exhibition "100 Years Tokyo" illustrates how Tokyo, which is also a major international city, gradually changed over the past 20th century.

It was first shown in Herten, Germany, in 1999. Since then it has travelled the world every six months, having been on show in nine cities in four states, including Britain and Austria.
