STOYANOV: WE ARE NOT SO DEVELOPED TO BE PASSIVE

Politics | November 18, 2001, Sunday // 00:00

Bulgarian democracy is not so well developed to afford people to be passive and non voting, current president Petur Stoyanov said, voting at 10 in the morning in a school at Durvenitza district in Sofia. People must vote to express their wish, he advised. Asked if he is afraid that if he will be elected with a small advantage he can not feel as a president of all Bulgarians, Stoyanov reminded the case with the last US presidential elections, when George W. Bush won with a slight majority. Nobody can say now George Bush is not a president of all US citizens, Stoyanov said. He went to vote with his wife Antonina, chairwoman of a foundation, which was put into controversial debate during the pre-election competitors exchange. Stoyanov said all the day he will have regular presidential engagements. He also said he is convinced he will win elections today and will stay in the presidency second term. Answering a question whether he is going to pack up his luggage today, Stoyanov said: Do not worry, there is a long time ahead to do this. Stoyanov had 34, 9 per cent in the first round of the elections, 1,4 per cent less that socialists party leader Georgi Parvanov.
