"Whatever the way it is called - peacemaking, third world or anti-terrorism - the war in Iraq is a real one... The border of Bulgaria is going through Iraq at the moment."

These are the introductory words of the Bulgarian book Bullet from Karbala by Krassen Buchkov, believed to trace the beginning of the first modern military travel notes in the national literature.

The author has written down the faces, events, smells, the overall atmosphere as he perceived it during his one-month stay in the Kilo base where Bulgarian troops are deployed in Karbala.

He described his way from "the oasis of glass and air-conditioning in al-Kuwait" to the "hell on the streets of Karbala", where Bulgarian soldiers are on daily patrol.

Krassen Buchkov left for the post-war country as a deputy editor-in-chief of Bulgarian Army daily and joined the third Bulgarian unit in Iraq.
