BG:GEOGRAPHY INDICATIONS HAVE TO BE MORE PROTECTED

Politics | November 13, 2001, Tuesday // 00:00

The Bulgarian position at the World Trade Organization conference in Doha was that there is need for greater protection of geographical indications under the Convention on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. Switzerland, India and Bulgaria were the leading countries that voiced their support for an expansion of the additional protection of geographical indications. At the moment, only the geographical indications of wine and alcohol drinks qualify for special protection. The Bulgarian representatives also expressed their stand that the special norms for separate categories of countries and the award of special rights and privileges should be done on the basis of objective criteria and economic indicators. One of them could be the GDP per capita, for example. In Doha, the Bulgarian delegation met officially with representatives of India, Switzerland, Japan, Israel, Austria, Turkey, Russia, Korea and Cuba. The issues that were discussed included bilateral relations, trade and investment.
