In its latest issue the Russian newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” published an article on the echelon of Bulgarian spent fuel and radioactive elements "smuggled" into Russia. The article stresses the fact that information was available in Russia even before the fuel left Bulgaria. The article claims that radioactive elements from the Bulgarian Nuclear Plant “Kozloduy” have been imported into Russia together with the spent fuel. The Editorial Staff of the newspaper claims it can show documents that set the price of the deal at USD 24 800 000. This has exactly been the amount of money given to Russia for the import of radioactive waste. The deal has allegedly been concluded between an agent of the Russian Ministry of Nuclear Energy and the N-plant “Kozloduy”. The payment has been made by the offshore company “Energy Invest and Trade Corporation”. Yordan Kostadinov, Executive Director of the N-plant, denied the transportation of spent fuel involved a mediator. According to him the deal was concluded between “Kozloduy” and “Technoexport” – Moscow and dealt with their commercial relations.
