BONEV: PEOPLE WILL DECIDE WHO TO VOTE FOR

Politics | November 12, 2001, Monday // 00:00

The candidate for President Bogomil Bonev said at his press conference after the elections that the basic reason why he did not gain more votes is that Petur Stoyanov was supported by the Simeon II National Movement. “These elections are a serious success for us since 30 days ago we started with 6%, now we have around 20%. That shows that over 1M voters supported a personality, not a party,” Bonev said. The reason why the electoral turnout was so low, according to Bonev, is that during the last five years, the presidential institution was deprived of individuality and that is why many people decided that there is no point in voting. “I am impressed with what Georgi Purvanov has done so far,” Bonev said, commenting on the coming run-offs. He added that he wishes the future President to have the will to go ahead and help the current Bulgarian Government. “ I believe that casting one’s vote is a definite form of democracy. That is why I will vote for sure. I call on the voters to vote. Still, I cannot tell them who to vote for,” Bonev pointed out. “ Simeon Saxe-Coburg had to become President at these elections. Petur Stoyanov did not let him to run, “ Bonev responded to a question why he said during his pre-election campaign that Saxe-Coburg will become Bulgarian President in 2007. “I think with optimism ahead,” Bonev said, answering to a question how he sees his future.
