A Bulgarian has helped Tom Hanks widen the character of Viktor Navorski in Steven Spielberg's latest movie The Terminal, which opened June 18 in the United States.

Viktor Navorski is a traveler from a fictional Eastern European nation who gets stuck in a New York City airport for months after a military coup in his native land.

Tom Hanks has reportedly been quite taken with the idea of playing an immigrant, thanks to his in-laws - his wife's mother is Greek and her father is Bulgarian.

His aide, Petar Budevski, the grandson of famous Bulgarian actress Adriana Budevska, departed for the United States two years ago.

Tom is so good and so facile. He did it beautifully. In fact, he speaks Bulgarian in the middle of the film, says Stanley Tucci, who plays the terminal's manager Frank Dixon, not so nice to Viktor.
