Danube River Has Its Day

Society | June 29, 2004, Tuesday // 00:00

Mayors from both sides of the Danube River, bordering Bulgaria and Romania, have joined celebrations for the Day of the Danube.

On this day, June 29, ten years ago the Convention on the Danube Protection was signed in Sofia by the countries where one of the longest European rivers flow through.

Seeking to save the Danube as "Europe's environment backbone", the initiative aims to make the river an exemplary model for uniting the efforts of many countries with the purpose of its ecological conservation.

Representatives from Danube-located countries and UNDP/GEF officials have developed a project for activities connected with the Danube River, including the idea of selecting a topic to slogan the Day of the Danube each year.
