PARVANOV 36 %, STOYANOV 35 %, RUN-OFF NEXT SUNDAY

Politics | November 11, 2001, Sunday // 00:00

35, 1 per cent of Bulgarian voted today for current president Petur Sotyanov, 35, 8 voted for the leader of the socialist party Georgi Parvanov, almost final prognostic results say.

No matter who will be first and who will be second - the results are huge surprise as they totally differ from the polls announced last Friday.

Next week voters will make their choice between Petur Stoyanov and Georgi Parvanov at a run-off elections next Sunday, November 18.

Some 20, 1 per cent voted for Bogomil Bonev, considered previously as main competitor to Petur Stoyanov.

The activity of the voters was unprecedented low for elections in Bulgaria – 42, 3 per cent.

Five years ago Stoyanov received 44, 07 per cent at the first round and 60 per cent at the second round against socialist candidate Ivan Marazov.

The approximate results for the other three participants in the elections are following: Reneta Indzhova – 5, 1 per cent, George Gantchev – 3, 5 per cent, Petur Beron - 2, 2. The only participant in the previous elections five years ago, except president Stoyanov, is George Gantchev having in 1996 21, 87 per cent of the votes, but still ranked third.

The elections on Sunday are the third direct presidential elections in Bulgarian history after in 1991 Zhelju Zhelev and in 1996 Petur Stoyanov were elected.

It is the first time since there are presidential elections in Bulgaria for a socialist candidate to be winner at the first round of elections.
