Four members of the tenth Bulgarian Antarctic expedition left for Livingston Island on November 9. Antarctic Institute Chairman Hristo Pimpirev, Yordan Yordanov, Andrei Kovachev and Dr Valentin Andreev sailed off on board of a Spanish naval ship. The other members of the expedition will soon join them. Two geologists from Munich University and two glaciologists from Luxembourg University will participate in the expedition. They will join their Bulgarian colleagues in two geological projects. The projects of the expedition are part of a long-term scientific program adopted in 1995, encompassing geology, geochemistry, meteorology, ecology, glaciology and biology. Bulgaria joined the Antarctic countries in 1978 when it signed the Antarctic Treaty without a voting right. In 1998 it was admitted as a full member and, along with 26 countries, has the right to a veto on any matters relating to the continent, which represents one tenth of the planet.
