A group of 100 Chinese environmentalists are set to clean up the "top of the world."

They are expected to collect waste on the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, later in September.

Volunteers aim to clear an approximate 615 tonnes of rubbish, accumulated over decades of mountaineering, from Everest's upper slopes.

They will be climbing at least 6,500 metres above sea level.

Between 1921 and 1960, there were just 15 expeditions to the 8,848 metre-high peak that straddles Nepal and Tibet. Now, around 20,000 people are believed to visit the region every year.
