British boy wizard Harry Potter conjured up big cash flow to the US box office last weekend when the third film in the series eclipsed its competition.
"Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" unseated the animated blockbuster flick "Shrek 2" from its two-week reign at the top of the US box office by taking USD 93.6 M.
Only Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Matrix Revolutions have fared better around the world.
Box office trackers Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. said the movie's haul was the highest ever for a June opening and third best movie debut of all time.
The latest in the series of movie adaptations of British author J.K. Rowling's books about a young wizard outstripped the ticket receipts on its two hit predecessors.
"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" earned 90.2 million dollars when it debuted in late 2001, while "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" raked in 88.3 million dollars when it opened the following year.
The shooting of the next-in-line blockbuster of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is already under way, due for release in November 2005, with a rising Bulgarian teen star in the role of Viktor Krum.
London-based Warner Bros producers have recently revealed his name - Stanislav Yanevski - with the only additional information about him that he is living and studying in London.
