The establishment of a strategy against organized crime and corruption, including a strategy to battle corruption within the Interior Ministry, was a priority task for the Ministry in the past 100 days since in power.” So far, the members of the internal corruption control unit at the National Organized Crime Control Service have been increased from eight to twenty,” Interior Minister Petkanov reported at a press conference. Other measures to eliminate crime groupings, to counteract the traffic as well as distribution of drugs and to fight contraband trade have been considered. Special measures were also taken in the last couple of days to enhance highway security and ensure the safety of foreign citizens passing through or staying in Bulgaria.” The prevention of terrorist acts on Bulgarian territory and of illegal emigration to EU countries are other priority areas in the work of the ministry,” Petkanov pointed out.
