US GRANTED USD 10 M TO BULGARIA FOR NATO ACCESSION

The United States House of Representatives supported the Bulgarian accession to NATO and granted USD 10 M to the country for that purpose. On November 7, the House of Representatives granted USD 55,5 M in total for the faster and easier accession to NATO of seven East European countries. Besides Bulgaria, the House backed Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. The bill, called “ Consolidation of Freedom” should be approved and signed by US President George Bush. NATO, which invited Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic to join in 1997, will decide on its next round of expansion at the Prague summit to take place in the autumn of 2002.
