A controversial anti-Bush documentary by Michael Moore won the top prize at the Cannes festival.

Fahrenheit 9/11 landed the Palme d'Or best film award. Thus, it became the first winning documentary in that category since 1956.

The film lashes US President George Bush for his alleged connections with Bin Laden cells and other Arab groupings. Moore also scourges Bush for overlooking terror warnings before the September 11 attack.

Another splash in Cannes was the Best Actor going to a 14-year-old Japanese boy. Yagira Yuuya was commended for his for his role in Nobody Knows.

The Grand Prize was handed to South Korean director Park Chan-wook for the film Old Boy.
