Health: Drinking and Breast Cancer

Society | May 14, 2004, Friday // 00:00

A recent report by Cancer Research in the UK has found that women who drink one glass of wine a day increase their risk of developing breast cancer by six per cent.

However, alcohol in moderate amounts does have some health benefits, such as decreasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Women should weigh up the risk according to their age. After the age of 65, women are more at risk of dying of heart disease than breast cancer, so the benefit of moderate drinking could outweigh the negative impact on breast cancer risk.

Other risk factors of developing breast cancer include early puberty, late menopause, a family history of the disease, delaying childbirth or not having children at all.

The report also concluded that smoking does not contribute significantly to the risk of developing breast cancer. Smoking does, however, contribute to lung cancer and other diseases that are difficult to treat.
