NHIF BUDGET 2002 CUT SALARIES FUNDING

“Salaries funds in budget 2002 of the Bulgarian National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) are down 10% compared to budget 2001,” Nikola Vasiilev, NHIF head announced. This is expected to lead to lay-offs among the 2,500 NHIF employees. The 2002 budget envisages BGN 100 M for inpatient treatment, compared to BGN 180 M in 2001. According to Kiril Ananiev, Deputy Finance Minister and member of the NHIF executive council the funding might be increased to BGN 180 M in July 2002. The outpatient treatment funding will remain at BGN 256 M. The funds allocated for medicines which are to be given partially or fully free of charge total BGN 131 M.
