Bulgaria's Academy of Sciences is suspending operations until the end of this year for lack of funds, an official said Friday, AP reported. "There is no cash left for heating, electricity, literature and scientific research," said Academy Chairman Ivan Yuhnovski. "The scholars will take their PCs home and work there if they can." Yuhnovski said most of the institutes that make up the Academy had no money to pay their utility bills. "Academy’s 2001 budget was extremely truncated," Yuhnovski said. He added the Academy had almost entirely used up the 40 million leva (some USD 18 M) budget at the end of October.
