Despite the changes to the structure of the Bulgarian Army that are being discussed in light of the new international situation, the length of the conscription service will not be altered. “Antiterrorist reaction forces will be created,” Defense Minister Nikolay Svinarov announced. According to him, by 2004, Bulgaria will have a compact, mobile and technically well supported armed forces adequate in their functionality to those of NATO. “The objective of the army reform is not only to get NATO membership but to improve the combat capabilities of the army itself in the process,” Svinarov aded.
