The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) is suspending operations until the end of this year because of lack of funds, an Academy official announced. "There is no cash left for heating, electricity, literature and scientific research," Ivan Yuhnovski, the Academy’s Chairman, said. "The scholars will take their PCs home and work there if they can," he added. Yuhnovski said most of the institutes that are in the Academy had no money to pay their utility bills. "BAS's 2001 budget was extremely small," Yuhnovski said. He reiterated that the Academy had almost entirely used up the USD 40 M budget at the end of October.
