“291 people from 12 countries, including 36 children, applied for refugee status in Bulgaria in October,“ the Agency for Refugees with the Government announced on November 1. Refugee status was granted to 16 people (including 4 children) from 7 countries. The procedure was terminated on one case. From 1993 to the end of October 2001, a total of 7,972 people (including 1,584 children) from 67 countries have asked to be recognized as refugees in Bulgaria. The applications of 1,220, including 300 children, were approved. 1,825, of whom 491 children, were recognized as humanitarian refugees. The applications of 1,480 people were turned down and the procedures were terminated in 1,298 cases. Another 19 had their refugee status revoked and 290 lost their humanitarian refugee status.
