FOREIGN DEMAND FOR BREAD WHEAT FALLS

Business | November 1, 2001, Thursday // 00:00

Foreign demand for Bulgarian bread wheat has suffered a fall for the first time in years. Despite the 700,000 surplus tones from the 2001 crop, only 150,000 tones have been sold on international markets. The fall was caused by the high cost price of the Bulgarian bread wheat. Bulgarian producers maintain prices, which cover their costs – BGN 160-180 per tone, VAT excluded, for the domestic market, and USD 95-96 per tone FBO price. At the same time Russia and Ukraine’s bread wheat surplus amounts to 6 million tones, which allows to them to offer low prices on the international markets.
