The Chief Mufti of the Bulgarian Muslims, Selim Mehmed, urged the British paper Guardian and all other media organizations to apologize to local people. The media reported that in the Bulgarian village Muslim fundamentalists are being trained. The call of the Chief Mufti was voiced in the Surnitsa mosque. Diplomats from the United States, Russia, Palestine, Algeria, Morocco and Turkey, Deputy Foreign Minister Boiko Kotsev and journalists were present. Local people have said they feel deeply hurt by the allegations. Palestinian Ambassador Mohamed Salayme, who is Dean of the Arab diplomatic corps here, said the aim of the visit is not "to prove or investigate something". "We are here to express our solidarity with the people of this beautiful region." He also said that the Surnitsa school is a traditional one for this type of establishments and has nothing to do with what the papers wrote. The Chief Mufti said he appreciates highly the visit by the diplomats, who could see for themselves that the Surnitsa people are pious Muslims and as civilized as any other people.
