BULGARIA- EU COMMITTEE ENDED WITH LONG DEBATE

The second session of the 13th meeting of the Bulgaria-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee ended with a debate on the final document and on the recommendations to Bulgaria for meeting EU membership criteria. Many corrections were made in the draft final document. The longest debate - about one hour - concerned the rights of ethnic groups and minorities. Five corrections were made in the chapter about the Kozloduy nuclear power plant and accelerating the restructuring of the power engineering sector. The participants adopted the final document with recommendations that were summarized in 32 points.Bulgaria should make further progress in developing an efficient, independent and professional judiciary, guaranteeing full respect for national and community laws, according to the Declaration and Recommendations adopted at the 13th meeting of the EU-Bulgaria Joint Parliamentary Committee. The document recommends that Bulgaria should improve the operation of the institutions responsible for asylum seekers and the integration assistance mechanisms for refugees, strengthen border controls to fight the traffic in human beings, and improve aviation security in light of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
