CABINET SUFFERS FALL IN PUBLIC CONFIDENCE

Politics | October 28, 2001, Sunday // 00:00

The public confidence in the new government plummeted rapidly by 20-25% since it took office. The data was announced on the Bulgarian National Radio by Boryana Dimitrova of “Alpha research” agency. At the beginning of its work the Cabinet enjoyed the approval of some 80% of the population. According to Dimitrova the current plunge is a normal development given the initial popularity of the Cabinet. Among the causes for the public disappointment she included the restrictive economic measures the government plans to undertake. The supporters of the Bulgarian Socialist Party who were disappointed by the fact that the Socialist party and the Simeon II National Movement nominated separate president candidates also reflected negatively on the Cabinet popularity. Sociologists predict that this could have further negative impact on the popularity of the candidate presidential couple Stoyanov-Kutskova. Nevertheless they still have considerable precedence over the other candidates.
