Pets: Choose a Rabbit

Society | March 5, 2004, Friday // 00:00

Rabbits make fantastic pets for both adults and responsible older children, but those thinking of purchasing a rabbit for a younger child should consider carefully both the responsibility involved in looking after rabbits and the nature of rabbits themselves. They have a fragile skeleton that requires gentle handling and support to the rear end when lifting. They are extremely susceptible to health problems if there is a sudden change in the environment such as change in diet, temperature, exercise etc.

Rabbits are very much individual characters that enjoy the company of humans as well as other rabbits. If socialization occurs at an early age rabbits can get along with dogs and cats.

There is a huge variety of breeds of rabbits from small to big, short hair to long hair. Before buying the rabbit ensure you have the necessary facilities such as a big enough hutch, exercise run, grooming equipment , bedding and suitable diet for the rabbit.

When choosing a rabbit, check that the coat is shiny and the skin is not scuffy and there are no signs of parasites. The eyes should be bright and clear with no discharge. The nose must also be checked to ensure that it is not running. Run your hand gently over the rabbit's body and ensure there are no cuts, grazes or abscess and that the rabbit does not show any signs of pain that could indicate a fracture.

Rabbits are herbivores whose natural diet in the wild consists of constant grazing on grassland and a variety of weeds that provides a high fibre diet. Fibre is very important to the diet as it absorbs bacterial toxins and prevents diarrhoea as well as being an important aspect to the rabbits dental healthcare.
