NATO enlargement and cooperation within the Vilnius group were discussed during the talks between Bulgarian Foreign Minister Solomon Passy and his Romanian counterpart Mircea Dan Geoana. The two ministers met on October 25 in Bucharest within the two-day donors conference with the Stability Pact. Passy and Geoana agreed to coordinate their efforts in the fight against terrorism. The Bulgarian Foreign Minister expressed a hope for expanding the bilateral dialogue about the Organization for Cooperation and Security in Europe (OSCE) and was interested to learn Romania`s experience as the current OSCE president. Bulgaria expects to take over OSCE`s presidency in 2004. Geoana familiarized Passy with the progress of the Romanian-Austrian initiative for cooperation among the Danubian states. The Romanian Foreign Minister said that the European Commission is likely to support the project and make it into a European initiative. Passy assessed the project as extremely useful, all the more so if it includes the environmental problems of the Danube. Passy and the Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Krustevski discussed European Corridor VIII and the link between the two countries railway networks. The Bulgarian Foreign Minister stressed the need to proceed to practical actions of the project and also spoke about the need for the Macedonian side to support the joint project. In Bucharest, Passy also met Erhard Busek, coordinator in the Southeast Europe Cooperation Initiative, US Ambassador in Romania Michael Guest and Croatian Foreign Minister Tanino Picula.
