Politics | October 24, 2001, Wednesday // 00:00
The 10th anniversary of the restoration of the rotary movement in Bulgaria was celebrated on October 22 in Sofia. There are two Rotary clubs in the Bulgarian capital, and a third one will be opened on October 24. The young Rotarians are united in Rotaract. Bulgaria has 25 Rotary clubs. On October 26, a club will be opened in Troyan (Northern Bulgaria), and another 12 clubs will be set up in other parts of the country in December. The Rotary Movement appeared in Bulgaria in 1933, when the first club was established. In 1941, under the supplement to the Act to Protect the Nation, the Movement together with other international organizations was banned. `The Rotary movement was restored in February 1991, and eight months later the first club in Sofia, was opened` the President of the organization Dr. Nikolai Boltadjiev recalled. In the past ten years the Rotarians in Bulgaria carried out dozens of humanitarian initiatives, including donation of medical equipment and medication to hospitals, giving out food to the poor.
