Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was under a cloud, facing the possibility of criminal charges after a businessman was indicted for attempting to bribe him when he was foreign minister. Meanwhile, the US said it would despatch two senior diplomats to the Middle East in the near future to press Israel and the Palestinians to fulfil their commitments to the faltering "roadmap" for peace. Violence also continued on the ground as a Palestinian woman was shot dead by Israeli forces.
