PARLIAMENT SPLIT ON MEDIA ACT AMENDMENTS

The Bulgarian Parliament argued on October 18 about a sentence from the Media Act. The Bulgarian Socialist Party MP Ivo Atanassov tabled amendments to the Radio and Television Act, which provided that Bulgarian cable and terrestrial TV channels should broadcast European production during 50% of their production time. According to MPs who support the current Media Act, the European Union requirement that all local TV channels should broadcast EU production may result in financial collapse of most of the TV channels in Bulgaria.
