Bulgaria Honours "Winter Herald" on Elections Day

Society | October 26, 2003, Sunday // 00:00

The day of Bulgaria's local elections October 26 came in coincidence with the Christian St Dimitar Day when Bulgarians honour the "winter herald" and "master of frost and snow" St Dimitar.

According to Christian mythology, St Dimitar rides a red horse and the year's first snowflakes fall from his white beard.

On that day people who bear the name Dimitar, Dimitrina, Mitko or Dimo traditionally host great parties and, joined by their friends, celebrate their Name's Day.
