Kurt Terpogor-Jenssen from the Danish environment agency presented the results from a Bulgarian environmental project at a seminar called `Comprehensive pollution prevention and control`. The Danish environment agency has provided 3 million krone of grant aid for the implementation of the project. With that money, it helped the Environment Ministry for the preparation of permits for comprehensive pollution prevention and control for five major industrial enterprises. The Umicore -Med copper smeltery in Pirdop, the KZM-Plovdiv nonferrous works, the OKZ-Kurdjali lead and zinc works, urea maker Chimco-Vratsa and the Sviloza chemical plant in Svishtov were included in the project. Danish consultants were involved in the drafting of the compliance programs and the permits. `The idea is not only to reduce pollution but to achieve a good balance between economic development and environmental protection through the use of a comprehensive approach,` said project coordinator Mihail Stoyanov. 100 of the country`s biggest enterprises who are to be provided with permits attended the seminar. They were briefed on the requirements contained in the EU directive and on the new law on environmental protection. Special attention was paid to the work that must be done by each of the companies that will be included in the procedure. The Danish experience in this field was also presented. 400 Bulgarian companies will have to align their operation to EU standards by 2007.
