In a bid to show case the Super Eagles before the Mali 2002 Nations Cup, the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has lined up series of friendlies that would be played in three Nigerian capitals from November 7 to 14.
Interim Secretary General of the NFA Patrick Okpomo confirmed to THISDAY that the matches are scheduled to hold in PortHarcourt, Enugu and the Northern town of Kaduna.
Three National teams from Norway, Bulgaria and Morocco are scheduled to be part of the matches which would be the build up to Mali 2002 nations Cup holding early January. Egypt the last team withdrew from the tournament and duly informed both the NFA and the organizers, their inability to honour the invitation which is being sponsored by Nigerian Breweries
NFA and the organisers met in Abuja last Tuesday to fine tune the details and inform both the Confederation of African Committee (CAF) and Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) on the dates. Before now, the organisers had listed only African countries Cameroon, Senegal and Morocco and the hosts Nigeria. But the Confederation of African Football CAF objected to the arrangement causing the FA and the organizers to invite non African countries but Morocco for the event.
On the proposed friendly with the Socceroos of Australia Okpomo disclosed that the first date which would have seen the Super Eagles playing the Australians in London three days after the game with the Japanese national team was put off because of logistics. The eagles wanted a mid week game while the Australians could not form a team. But the two countries are still working out a date that will see the two teams meeting before the end of the year either in London or any other European country where the Australians will play another friendly.
