Exhibit on The Hague's Int'n'l Justice Flatters Bulgaria

An exhibition on the heart of international law - Dutch city The Hague - is about to open in Sofia complimenting Bulgaria on its role in establishing mechanisms to settle peacefully disputes between countries. The exposition which opens on Friday at the Sofia Municipal Gallery will display the history and present of Hague-based international courts and tribunals in an array of images, portrait and original objects.

Bulgarian public is the first non-specialized audience that has the opportunity to see the exhibition before it starts a lengthy tour across Europe, Dutch curator Dr Arthur Eyffinger told reporters. Citing the reasons, he preferred to concentrate on Bulgaria's historic significance rather than the fact that the country will next year succeed the Netherlands as a president of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe whose framework encompasses the exhibition. Dr. Eyffinger pointed at the portrait of the most dashing participant in the First Hague Peace Conference in 1899 - the envoy of the then youngest principality in Europe - Bulgarian Dimitar Stanchov. The 35-year old diplomat from Sofia had remarkable contribution for talking the world powers into setting a justice-and-peace system.

According to Dr. Eyffinger, the exhibition speaks of the big role a small nation can play on the international scene such as the role of Netherlands "protected through the centuries from a number of dangers by its geographical isolation" and Bulgaria "that was in the eye of the storm for years."

The exhibition that will run till October 26 is organized by the Dutch embassy in Sofia assisted by Bulgaria's governmental General Department of Archives. It also takes place under the aegis of Bulgaria's Foreign Minster Solomon Passy.
