PURVANOV INVITED STOYANOV FOR PRE ELECTION DEBATES
Politics | October 11, 2001, Thursday // 00:00
The presidential candidate of `Coalition For Bulgaria`Georgi Purvanov invited incumbent President Petur Stoyanov, who is running for re-election as an independent candidate, to a debate on National Television or in Sofia`s National Palace of Culture before an audience. Purvanov and his running mate Angel Marin on October 10 launched their election campaign at a meeting with the public. Under the effective Election of President and Vice President Act, independent and party candidates must hold separate disputes on the national broadcast media. The Central Electoral Commission recommended that the candidates make arrangements for the debates on their own, since Purvanov is the only candidate nominated by a party coalition and thus has no opponent to debate with. The presidential couple Purvanov and Marin filed a proposal in the Central Electoral Colaition to unite the media time for independent candidates and candidates, nominated by parties. Stoyanov and Nelly Koutskova refused to appear in campaign debates on the national broadcast media.
