Libya denied American claims that it had tried to procure weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), AFP reported. The official news agency Jana cited foreign ministry official Hassuna al-Shaush as calling the allegations "no more than an invention". "We condemn the attempts by the US deputy ambassador (James Cunnigham) to mislead the UN Security Council," he added. Cunningham had said that the regime of Libyan leader Moamer Gadhafi was "actively pursuing" weapons of mass destruction, ballistic missiles, biological and chemical weapons and unilateral US sanctions would remain in place.
