"I would back Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Gen. Boyko Borisov is he would run for the post of Sofia mayor," Bulgaria's Finance Minister Milen Velchev said September 7.
Velchev added that the general would make a good mayor for Bulgaria's capital, and be able to cope with its residents' problems -- high crime rates being among the major ones.
On Saturday Interior Minister Georgi Petkanov said that some members of Bulgaria's ruling Simeon II National Movement (SIINM) suggested that the party nominates Borissov for the post. However, the general then told journalists that such matters should not be discussed publicly before they asked for his consent.
The SIINM will probably have to choose its nominee between Borissov and Sports Minister Vasil Ivanov, Minister Petkanov insisted on Sunday.
