Bulgarian policemen detained late on Saturday Yane Yanev, leader of the Agrarian Union, who had accepted the responsibility for the firework attack against a conference of right-wing Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) earlier the same day.
The meeting in the city of Plovdiv was upset by a couple of smoke-casting fireworks thrown into the room, and UDF members had to be evacuated. The meeting, which was part of the party's preparation for local elections in October, started about an hour and a half later than originally scheduled.
"This is just the beginning of the fight against political mobsters in the country," Yanev said shortly after the attack was carried out. The man refused to reveal whether some member of the Agrarian Union personally threw the fireworks.
Yanev was detained for 24 hours at the police station in Plovdiv. However, the city's police chief Valentin Petrov told the Darik Radio that he will demand for Yanev's detainment term to be prolonged.
So far the Agrarians' leader is the only suspect for the assault.
