`Bulgaria has heeded the recommendations that have been made and the negative trends of the past decade have been eliminated. This means that the Sreburna nature reserve could regain its status,` is the conclusion of the assessment of the reserve made by representatives of UNESCO and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The international experts have concluded that the water level of the Sreburna lake has been restored and is being maintained, the fauna and flora populations are viable, the diversity of fish species has increased, the Dalmatian pelican population is the largest in existence and with a very high procreation rate, a Protected Wilderness Tract Act was adopted in 1998 and the reserve has a management plan which will be approved by the Environment Ministry by the end of 2001. In 1993, the Sreburna reserve entered on list of endangered world cultural and natural heritage sites and the secretariat of the Ramsar Convention made a number of recommendations to the Bulgaria side on restoring the water level of the lake and on fighting the loss of biodiversity. A report will be drafted by the UNESCO committee detailing the scientific data and conclusions about the state of the reserve which can lead to the removal of Sreburna from the endangered list. The report will be discussed at a December working meeting of the UNESCO committee in Finland Bulgaria has been invited as an observer at the meeting.
