The US Helsinki Committee criticized Bulgaria's religious legislation claiming that it didn't provide enough freedom for different religious groups in the country.

Bulgaria doesn't comply with the religious freedom standards set by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) , Radio Deutsche Welle said, citing Chirman of the US Helsinki Committee Christopher Smith.

Smith's statement came in connection with Bulgaria's upcoming presidency of the OSCE in 2004.
