Bulgaria Seeks Alternative Power Sources

Bulgaria has considerable potential to use alternative power sources, report of the country's Energy Ministry showed Wednesday. The report also suggested that power obtained from sun radiation, wind or hot mineral springs could reach some 7 percent of Bulgaria's power production by 2020.

Bulgaria's southern and eastern territories receive the biggest amount of sun radiation as compared to other parts of the country, the report said. There are also some 136 mineral springs registered in Bulgaria. However, most of them bring up mostly low-temperature water.

The country's Black Sea coast and the mountain regions have the largest potential for wind-generated power. However, installing the special facilities for this method of power obtaining requires specific terrain and enough space.

Some 80-90 percent of Bulgaria's flat territories allow the installation of such facilities, the Ministry's report said.
