Bulgaria anticipates a substantial increase in its customs revenues in 2003 according to the country's finance minister. This year's results will overshoot what was collected in 2001 by BGN 700 M.

In 2002, the customs revenues were up BGN 222 M year-on-year, Finance Minister Milen Velchev stressed. This year brought an increase of BGN 226 M only in its first half, the minister said. If the trend remains steady, the revenues might go up by BGN 700 M, he forecasted.

Minister Velchev has hired British consultancy Crown Agents to help Bulgaria reform its customs administration and fight corruption.
