Bulgaria's Iraq Avant-Garde Departed amid Tightened Security

Politics | July 26, 2003, Saturday // 00:00

The first thirty soldiers from Bulgaria's Iraq-bound peacekeeping battalion left Saturday morning from the country's second city Plovdiv. They boarded three IL-76 jets to get to Kuwait where their first base is located.

The planes took off consecutively from 8:00 to 8:46 Sofia time each carrying ten combaters and military equipment.

Police imposed unprecedented security measures not allowing even the families of the combaters at the Krumovo military airport in Plovdiv and shutting the doors for journalists.

The thirty-strong avant-garde will be joined in early August by the rest of Bulgaria's battalion. After an initial stay in Kuwait, the Bulgarian peacekeepers will be transferred into Iraq. Their mission is expected to start on September 1 under Polish command.
