US Sends Warships to Liberia

US President George W Bush has ordered American warships to take up positions off the coast of Liberia to support a peacekeeping mission in the war-torn country, the White House has said. The statement said the US troops' role would be "limited in time and scope" while United Nations forces deploy to assume "the responsibility for peacekeeping". Nigeria is poised to send peacekeepers, but following discussions on Thursday between West African, UN and US officials, there was still no firm decision on when they would be deployed.
