NUCLEAR ACCIDENT DRILLS BEGIN AT ROMANIAN NUCLEAR PLANT

Rompres An International Nuclear Emergency Exercise outside the CNE [Nuclear Electricity Plant] PROD Cernavoda site (eastern Romania) - Axiopolis 2001 started on Tuesday, 2 October, in the Neptun resort on the Black Sea shore.

The event, organized by the Public Administration Ministry, the Interior Ministry, the Industry and Resources Ministry, the National Defence Ministry, the Waters and Environment Protection Ministry, and the National Society of the Red Cross, attempts to check the capacity of response and organization of the national and local public authorities in case of a nuclear disaster, the population`s readiness for facing the disaster, and the way of acting in such a situation until the Cernavoda Nuclear Plant starts working again.
The works of the Central Commission for Nuclear Accidents and Fall of Cosmic Objects, which take place in Neptun on 2 October, as a preliminary stage of the exercise on 3 and 4 October, stressed the importance of checking and assessing by the national authorities the procedures of notifying the International Atomic Energy Agency and the national agencies in Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova of the nuclear emergency. The works also focus on the alarming and sheltering of the population in the emergency protection area which covers 10 km around the nuclear plant, the use of potassium iodide and the emergency evacuation from the danger area.
