This story is dedicated to the Byzantine cunning of this glorious people - the chukchas - who live far up north, in Russia's polar circle.
Two chukchas went out hunting for walruses and actually caught one - you know, of those with the huge tusks. They caught him at the very shore of the harsh and frozen sea.
They grabbed the walrus' tail and started hauling... However, the animal was clever enough to stick his tusks into the ground so that he cannot be moved. The chukchas went on pulling but he was holding on.
They have been pulling for two hours when of a Russian man who was just passing by hailed: "Boys, chukchas, my brothers, why take the pain of all this?! Take him by the tusks and pull in the other direction!"
The chukchas gave this suggestion some thought and finally accepted it. They took the walrus by the tusks, pulled and it suddenly proved so much easier.
After some time one of the chukchas spoke in awe: "Look, this Russian guy proved really clever!"
His pal just murmured: "Very clever! Look how far into the sea we've gone!"
