Special Service Officers "Armed Bulgarian Mafia"

Politics | June 27, 2003, Friday // 00:00

Officers from Bulgaria's special services reign over the country's heavily armed mafia, an influential member of the Parliament's security committee said. According to Nikolay Chukanov from Bulgaria's ruling party, these people still work as "berets."

"There is no small country in the world that alike Bulgaria harbors so many armored cars, such heavly armed mafia comfortably at large and attacking undisturbed," the MP sounded alarm. Chukanov insisted that the masterminds of mafia armament were special service officers who "headed the Bulgarian banks and insurance companies" over the first years after the fall of communism in the country.

Bulgaria witnesses fierce debate on organized crime after months of numerous business murders and intimidation attacks and following a ministers-link-to-mafia scandal.
