Unexpected Defeat Knocks Bulgaria's Maleeva out of Wimbledon

Sports | June 25, 2003, Wednesday // 00:00

In what is seen as a sensational defeat, Bulgaria's best tennis player Magdalena Maleeva was defeated in the second round by 36 seed Argentina's Paola Suarez 6:2, 2:6, 3:6. Thus 12-seed Maleeva was knocked out of the USD 15.54 M Wimbledon grand slam tournament.

This was the fourth time that the two tennis players met, with the Bulgarian leading with two victories against one defeat ahead of Suarez.

Maleeva's defeat came as the biggest surprise in women's singles since the beginning of the tournament.

Maleeva earned EUR 16,000 after her victory over Anca Barna (Germany) in women's singles first round match, beating her convincingly 6-0 6-1.
